MALAGA, SPAIN – Accompanied by Scenic Group owners Glen and Karen Moroney, NASA Astronaut Dr. Kathryn Sullivan christened one of the world’s most technologically advanced ultra-luxury yachts, Scenic Eclipse II, in front of an esteemed audience in Málaga, Spain on June 3.

With the beautiful Málaga port decorated for the festive occasion and the evening sun beaming down on the guests, speeches were made by Glen Moroney, President of the Málaga Port Authority Carlos Rubio – who presented a special plaque to Scenic Group Founder and Chairman Glen Moroney, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Mr Victor Gonzalez, and Dr. Sullivan. The event included VIPS, trade guests and media from around the world. Dr. Sullivan successfully christened Scenic Eclipse II while toasting the Discovery Yacht and all who sail on her.

Dr. Sullivan is an American geologist and oceanographer, and a former NASA astronaut and US Navy officer. She is the first American woman to walk in space and a veteran of three shuttle missions. Dr. Sullivan also holds the honor of being the first woman to visit the deepest spot in the oceans, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, and served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) after being confirmed by the US Senate in 2014. Dr. Sullivan, having received many accolades and awards during her distinguished careers, is also the holder of three Guinness World Records: the first woman to reach the Challenger Deep, the first person to visit space and the deepest point on Earth, and the greatest vertical extent travelled by an individual (within Earth’s exosphere) – thus the title as the “World’s Most Vertical Person.”

“I was so honored to be asked to be Godmother of Scenic Eclipse II as it was not something I ever expected,” stated Dr. Kathy Sullivan during the christening of the Discovery Yacht. “But now that I have had the opportunity to tour the ship with Glen and Karen Moroney and hear their story and see their vision for travel, I am eager to join her for a sailing. Seeing the level of luxury that is possible in what is truly an expedition vessel has me wondering what the Moroneys could do with the rather restrictive confines of the Space Shuttle and the super cramped environment of the submersible we used to dive the Mariana Trench. I am touched and honored to be Scenic Eclipse II’s Godmother.”

“It is rare to find anyone who has the list of unprecedented accomplishments achieved by Dr. Kathy Sullivan,” suggested Glen Moroney, Founder and Chairman of The Scenic Group. “The depth of her experiences above our planet, and on and below our seas, and her incredible passion for exploration is truly inspiring and is what we feel makes her the perfect representation of our newest Scenic Eclipse Discovery Yacht. Although we are not able to duplicate some of her more extreme adventures – yet – we do believe that Scenic Eclipse II offers our guests exploration possibilities unlike any in the industry. We are so honored to have Dr. Sullivan as the Godmother of Scenic Eclipse II and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship.”

After launching Scenic Eclipse in 2019, the World’s First Discovery Yacht, Scenic furthers its industry leadership role when it comes to continuous innovation incorporating several new features on Scenic Eclipse II. The newest member of the Scenic Eclipse fleet has an expanded steam room in the 5,920ft² (550sqm) Senses Spa that includes aromatherapy, as well as an integrated ice fountain and experience showers, and a KLAFS custom salt therapy lounge with heated beds. An expanded dedicated infrared ‘ocean view’ lounge with color light therapy to energize and reinvigorate skin cells is new. A redesign of Deck 10, the new Sun Deck, includes a new Sky Bar with indoor and outdoor seating and privacy cabanas, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy stunning views with a drink in hand, and a large, oval-shaped pool with comfortable relaxation space that serves as a perfect venue for sail-away deck parties. In addition to the ultra-luxury Discovery Yachts’ two state-of-the-art six-guest helicopters, Zodiacs, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other activity amenities, Scenic Eclipse II will also have a next generation American-made electric submersible, capable of comfortably holding eight guests.

The addition of the 228-guest (200 in the polar regions) Scenic Eclipse II to the fleet opens even more of the world to the guests with new itineraries, destinations, and discovery adventures. The combined fleet will visit 50 countries across all seven continents in 2023 and 2024. The ultra-luxury Scenic Eclipse II is built to explore the coldest of climates (like her sister she is Polar Class 6) but also offers all the amenities and activities sought for the warmer regions of the world from its custom-designed marina including Tiwal sailing boats, swim platforms, E-bikes, snorkeling, wake boarding, water skiing, etc. Scenic Eclipse II will explore the islands of Greenland, Svalbard and Iceland above the Arctic Circle and the Caribbean in its inaugural season. New voyages in 2024 and 2025 will take in the Asia Pacific region, including New Zealand, Western Australia’s remote Kimberly region and Coral Coast, Tahiti, Fiji, Borneo and Japan. Both Scenic Eclipse Discovery Yachts will spend the November to February Antarctica season taking guests to many of the most remote regions of this amazing continent, including the rarely-visited Weddell Sea, where the Emperor Penguin reigns supreme, and the world’s largest marine sanctuary, the seldom visited Ross Sea.

Scenic Eclipse II has 114 all-verandah suites range in size from 345 ft² to 2,659 ft² (32m² to 245m²); 10 dining options – from Asian Fusion to French fine dining to a Chef’s Table to 24/7 room service; a 5,920 ft² (550m²) spa with a well-equipped gym and separate yoga and Pilates studio; the aforementioned two helicopters and electric submersible; a state-of-the-art theater for entertainment and lectures; indoor and outdoor plunge pools; butler service for all guests; and an almost 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio. And then there is the technology: innovative zero-speed stabilizer fins, 50% larger than standard to provide greater stability cutting roll by more than 85%; the highest passenger ship ice class rating – Polar Class 6; redundancies in propulsion, navigation, safety systems and food refrigeration; state-of-the-art bridge systems; and a GPS dynamic positioning system allowing for stationary positioning without an anchor, reducing environmental impact and enhancing safety during Zodiac operations.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours has grown over its 37-year history to include award-winning, truly all-inclusive river and ocean cruises and handcrafted land journeys that take guests to many of the world’s most fascinating destinations. In 2019, Scenic introduced Scenic Eclipse, The World’s First Discovery Yacht, followed by Scenic Eclipse II, on 13 April 2023. Scenic is part of The Scenic Group, which includes Emerald Cruises, Mayflower Cruises & Tours, and Evergreen Tours.

Havila Voyages confirms ambition for emission-free coastal sailings by 2030 – with current ships https://www.traveldailynews.com/sea-travel/cruises/havila-voyages-confirms-ambition-for-emission-free-coastal-sailings-by-2030-with-current-ships/ Mon, 05 Jun 2023 06:36:53 +0000 https://www.traveldailynews.com/?p=313990 Another goal set by Havila Voyages was to reduce onboard food waste and produce only 75 grams of food waste per person per day.

The article Havila Voyages confirms ambition for emission-free coastal sailings by 2030 – with current ships first appeared in TravelDailyNews International.

]]>
Havila Voyages has launched its first ever sustainability and human rights report. The report highlights the company’s ambitious goals of carbon neutrality by 2028 and for an emission-free coastal route by 2030 – all achievable with the current fleet.

Havila Voyages is actively working to reduce emissions and meet future environmental requirements.

“Last year, we made history as the world’s first cruise company to sail into the Geirangerfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site emission-free and silently, four years before the Norwegian government’s requirement for emission-free ferries and ships in the World Heritage areas comes into effect,” says CEO Bent Martini.

“This is clear proof of our ambitions. We look forward to continuing our journey and doing our part to make tourism and shipping more sustainable”.

Martini points out that Havila Voyages intends to become both carbon-neutral and achieve zero emissions in the future. “It starts with gradually replacing natural gas with biogas, and the goal is to be carbon-neutral by 2028. After that, we will switch to emission-free fuel alternatives such as hydrogen, and the goal is zero emissions by 2030 – with the ships we have today,” he says.

Ambitious goal achieved

Another goal set by Havila Voyages was to reduce onboard food waste and produce only 75 grams of food waste per person per day. The company’s food concept includes serving all meals à la carte and using locally sourced and short-travelled ingredients.

“Meeting our target of 75 grams of food waste across four fully operational ships, means we can reduce food waste by 60 tons per year, by not using buffets”, says Martini.

“It is therefore very gratifying to report that this year we successfully achieved our goal and collect only 71 grams of food waste per person per day on board. We have accomplished this thanks to the fantastic efforts of those who have developed our food concept, those who prepare and serve the food on board, and, not least, our guests who are made aware of the concept. And no one leaves our restaurants hungry.”

In addition, Havila Kystruten can report a high degree of waste sorting and effective circular use of resources on its ships.

Aiming to make a positive contribution

Havila Voyages’ ships, which include battery packs that enable emission-free and silent operation for 4 hours at a time, are the most environmentally friendly vessels to have ever sailed the historic coastal route Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen. With current operations, CO2 emissions are reduced by 35-40%, and local emissions such as NOx and SOx are reduced by over 90%, compared to equivalent ships using traditional fossil fuels.

“We believe that our sustainable approach to coastal tourism and our focus on climate and the environment are a positive contribution to the transition to a zero-emission society. We look forward to continuing our journey and doing our part to make tourism and shipping more sustainable socially and environmentally,” says Martini.

“These reports help our investors, partners, employees, and customers learn more about our business and how we will continue to develop an inclusive and environmentally conscious company. Together, we will lead the way towards a greater focus on sustainability, and we aim to be among the first to achieve zero emissions,” he concluded.

MIRAMAR, FL – Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) – the trade association that represents the mutual interests of destinations and stakeholders throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico, along with Member Lines that operate over 90 percent of the global cruising capacity – is pleased to share more information as efforts ramp up for the upcoming FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show taking place in Mazatlán, Mexico from November 7-10.

“This is the only event in the region that puts any attendee in direct contact with cruise executives that can drive business,” said Micky Arison, Chairman, Carnival Corporation & plc.and FCCA.

“We are proud of this event’s continued success for attendees and so many throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico,” said Michele Paige, CEO, FCCA. “The FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show has been the birthplace of everything from new tours to entire destination developments, so we are excited about what this year can bring for our destination partners.”

FCCA will build on the new format focused on one-on-one meetings and workshops that launched last year and featured a record number of one-on-one meetings – with 652 held at the event: 600 between delegates and cruise executives and 52 between cruise company presidents/CEOs and government leaders. Any preregistered delegate can schedule a series of 15-minute meetings with participating executives to pitch their product and receive individualized input, with the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show being the only event in the region offering this direct contact with cruise executives, and FCCA is also coordinating private meetings for its destination partners.

The agenda is already being penciled in for the event’s main meeting, the Heads of Government Meeting, where Ministers of Tourism will join presidents and above from FCCA Member Lines to discuss issues regarding the region, with it open to any suggested topics. Currently on the table are an increase in summer traffic and passenger/crew spending, better experiences, investment opportunities and development of new ports.

A series of workshops led by cruise executives and experts will also headline the event. While still in planning, one will give the spotlight to attending presidents and above from FCCA Member Lines, and a few have already confirmed attendance:

  • Michael Bayley, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean International
  • David Herrera, President, Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Richard Sasso, Chairman, MSC Cruises USA

GIJON, SPAIN – Swan Hellenic’s environmentally advanced expedition cruise ship SH Vega hosted the signing ceremony of an agreement by which Swan Hellenic, the Philippe Cousteau Foundation and SDG4MED engage to contribute jointly to the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”. Under the agreement, Swan Hellenic commits to provide its fleet for use as “ships of opportunity”, enabling the foundations’ scientists to gauge the health of our Blue Planet in its most remote and pristine regions, including Arctic, Antarctica and Africa coasts, where the Swan Hellenic fleet is, of course, present for several months every year.

In late 2021, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU mandated the Commission to accelerate Ocean and Water health conservation and restoration worldwide. The resulting EU Mission is a coordinated effort to pool the necessary financial, scientific and operational resources.

The three organisations were among the first in the world to endorse the Mission Charter, which aims to create a sustainable, carbon-neutral, circular blue economy that plays a key role in achieving climate neutrality, since the oceans are major carbon sinks, protect biodiversity and foster economic prosperity, being expected to generate €2.5 trillion per year by 2030. The Mission 2030 targets include a 30% reduction in marine microplastics and the deployment of EU carbon neutral, circular blue economy communities.

In a message of congratulations to mark the signing, Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, Institutional President of the Philippe Cousteau Foundation, remarked: “It gives me great pleasure to see our Foundation and country involved in this landmark agreement. It is not only an important early milestone in the EU Mission to help restore the balance between human activity and the health of our planet. It is also an important commitment to the values of peace, as recognised by the involvement of the World Peace Forum, including directly in the person of its President, José Félix Bentz Oliver. As such it is a source both of inspiration and of hope.”

Rafael Lobeto Lobo, Secretary General of the Philippe Cousteau Foundation and former Director General of the Spanish Merchant Navy, commented: “Life on Earth depends on the health of the connected system of the oceans, seas and inland waters, which cover around 75% of the Earth’s surface. It regulates our climate and provides oxygen, drinking water, clean energy and food. Yet man-made changes are putting our ocean and waters at serious risk, with pollution and global heating causing biodiversity loss and extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and heatwaves.”

Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito noted: “These ambitions are embedded in our DNA. All of Swan Hellenic’s ships are equipped with cutting-edge green technologies, including the latest generation tier III diesel engines with urea injection, dynamic positioning systems to avoid anchoring in delicate seabed locations, and advanced wastewater treatment plants. We have also increasingly eliminated “single use plastics” on board as supported by supply chain availability in remote areas.”

All three organisations in fact already have their own individual Mission Charter commitments, with the Philippe Cousteau Foundation promoting ocean literacy in schools and among fishermen and seafarers, SDG4MED making the “LIFE4MEDECA Knowledge Center” available to municipalities to pursue a shared action plan, and Swan Hellenic continuously investing in the latest green technologies and operations.

Their new partnership is significant in recognising that individual initiatives, though commendable, are not sufficient, as SDG4MED President Mario Dogliani explained: “Acting together will greatly amplify what we are able to achieve through our efforts. This partnership offers us a vital tool – Swan Hellenic’s ships and their destinations – to collect data on ocean health with previously inconceivable reach and granularity. Data collected in rarely accessed ocean areas will improve the accuracy of scientists’ assessments of ocean health and its evolution. Moreover, the direct involvement of Swan Hellenic crew and guests paves the way for a new era of sustainable, ecologically aware cruising.”

“Oceans are like humans,” observed Zito. “A full picture of health parameters enables effective medical treatment. Using commercial ships as sensors of Ocean Health is just common sense and I am pleased that Swan Hellenic is able to help make this a reality and best practice. Our new commitment with this partnership is in many ways a natural extension of our existing practice of inviting cruise guests to actively contribute to a series of leading “Citizen Science” programmes, providing data on the environment and marine life, while building their awareness and knowledge of scientific initiatives”.
